PrEP vs. PEP: What’s the difference?

• PrEP is for Prevention (Before): Taken daily or regularly before potential exposure to prevent HIV. It does not work after an exposure.

• PEP is for Emergencies (After): Taken after a potential HIV exposure (condomless sex, shared needles, or assault).

Possible HIV Exposure?
You must start PEP within 72 hours. If your clinic is closed or it is the weekend, go to an Emergency Room immediately. Do not wait.
